YOUR IMAGE

What is IMAGE?

When it comes to first impressions or performing in front of others [public speaking is a bit like a performance] then the audience will be swayed by various factors, sometimes all at once.

Did you know that the in first 9 seconds of your speech, presentation or interview you will have created a vital first impression that will be hard to shake in the minds of your audience?

What you say and how you say it in those 9 seconds can make the difference of positive or negative reaction for the rest of your performance.

Similarly, what you say in the last 9 seconds of your speech is what the audience takes away with them. Impact and being remembered are vital over being boring and totally forgettable.

When people listen to us and watch us at the same time they are making up their minds about you in all sorts of ways.

Simple and effective gestures like smiling can go a long way to gain confidence and empathy from your audience.

Body language is essential to compliment and emphasise what you are saying.

Also what you wear, the colours you choose, the level of formality you adopt can all contribute to the overall image of yourself that people will note in their heads.

You have control over this. It might be an idea to get to know what suits you, what makes you feel confident in terms of how you dress and that confidence often translates into using more natural, comfortable body language or use of facial gestures.

For example Colours. Did you know that colours have a language too? For example, wearing

RED: Can give you an energy boost but may not be the best colour to wear or interview

PINK: Can gain you sympathy but might not make you look important

BLUE: Can make you seem trustworthy but a bit too conservative

BROWN: Can make you look dependable but a tad boring

YELLOW: Can make you seem cheerful and uninhibited but impulsive

GREEN: Can make you seem stubborn or predictable but dependable

I emphasise the CAN because there are always different slants to most things and you can mix and match according to the task in hand. An interview for a job may require a slightly different image to one with the bank manager!
